The artist has handed over the entirety of his £25k award winnings to the MVT, which functions to preserve the Britain's grassroots music venues.

Fender was awarded the cheque on mid-October as his third album his work was chosen as the top album of the last 12 months.

He has opted to give the cash to the trust, in appreciation of the vital role grassroots venues fulfilled in his beginning days.

"As an artist wouldn't be doing this success if it weren't for all the performances I performed around the area, and further afield, when I was beginning," said Sam Fender. "These spaces are renowned, but they are facing challenges."

Since the start of 2023, at least 150 of these venues have shut down – roughly one-sixth of the entire UK sector.

Recently, well-known musicians such as the band Pulp, the group Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all supported the trust in its initiatives to keep the scene afloat, by applying a minor surcharge to their ticket prices, which supports local stages.

He also participated, collecting in excess of £100,000 on his recent tour to support thirty-eight local spots across Britain.

The money helped spaces that were dealing with potential shutdown due to difficulties arising from flooding, blazes and personal losses, as well as regulatory hurdles, court cases and noise complaints.

Additional spaces obtained funding support in upgrading facilities and gear that directly benefitted musicians and fans.

"The notion that money from concerts in big venues backs the independent spots, where it begins for musicians like me, is just sensible," Fender has said.

He is not the first artist to contribute his Mercury Prize funds to worthy causes.

When Pulp earned the prize in the mid-90s for their record the album, frontman Jarvis Cocker stated that the band would donate their winnings to the charity War Child.

That year, musician she split her bounty across multiple organizations, including the children's charity and a Sickle Cell organization.

"Additionally, I contributed a grand to Highgate Newtown, to their classes, because I did gymnastics when I was younger and they required new equipment," Ms Dynamite shared with a publication.

Two years ago, the band gave their funds to the community center that nurtured their band, alongside other grassroots music organisations.

And winners that year M People gave their prize to a charity for MS after a close contact was identified with the disease.

"Receiving the award was sufficient," stated artist Heather Small. "The cash was the extra but we didn't need the cherry, because we had the honor. So our victory affected the lives of others."

In the past week, the trust announced it had rescued two local spots in south-east England, by transferring them to local control.

One venue in the city and The Croft in Bristol were purchased under the community ownership program, which is backed by the arts council and music fans who acquire "stakes" in the buildings.
